As the world celebrates the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Vester Prison, 46664 has announced that this year’s Nelson Mandela Day will be held in Madrid.

Nelson Mandela Day falls on Mr Mandela’s birthday, July 18, and  calls on people around the world to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to a good cause; effectively  walking in Mr Mandela’s footsteps.

Through Nelson Mandela Day, the world is urged to celebrate and honour the legacy of the man who fought for equal rights for all and give 67 minutes of their time to help those less fortunate.

Speaking about this year’s plans, Nelson Mandela Day International Director Tim Massey said they were working with different institutions to develop a series of educational programmes in Madrid.

“We are also developing a number of exciting social and corporate activities that include a Nelson Mandela Day concert, which will top the celebrations in July.”

Leading up to Nelson Mandela Day Madrid, a number of events, including a Nelson Mandela Day exhibition, will be held.

This exhibition, entitled Nelson Mandela in 7 words, will use the words Act, Lead, Learn, Listen, Unite, Remember and Speak to highlight the values Mr Mandela espouses.

Nelson Mandela Day will be working alongside leading NGOs to encourage people to participate in a series of volunteering activities, and to give 67 minutes to their chosen social cause.

Education is very close to Madiba’s heart; Nelson Mandela Day Madrid 2010 aims to reach several schools through a road show with the objective of spreading the values that embody Madiba’s life, as well as invite students, through schools and social networks, to participate in the contest “Nelson Mandela Day and Youngsters”.

By answering the question, “How do you interpret the Mandela Legacy?” they will have the chance to be one of 12 selected to travel to South Africa and visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg.

As HIV/AIDS continues to take its toll on the world, Nelson Mandela Day Madrid organisers will also strive to raise awareness about this disease, which has claimed the lives of many.

Nelson Mandela Day is also engaging with sporting institutions to develop a series of events in the 67 days leading up to Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday in July.

In addition, 46664 will stage a multi-artist concert to mark the culmination of the programme of events taking place in the city, in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day and the values that Mr Mandela lives by.

Mr. Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 year's since he began actively campaigning for the human rights of every South African. Nelson Mandela Day now calls upon each of us to give 67 minutes of our time in helping others, rooted in the idea that each individual has the ability to make an imprint and change the world around them for the better.
