    One week celebrating a lifetime.
    16-28 September 2008

I am 90 – One Week Celebrating a Lifetime, is a collection of iconic photographs documenting Nelson Mandela’s visit to London in June as part of his 90th birthday celebrations, which is part of the Royal Albert Hall’s exhibition series, reflect.

The 46664 exhibition was launched at an evening champagne reception last night (Wednesday September 17) at the Royal Albert Hall, for over 150 invited guests. Attendees included Sol and Heather Kerzner, Paul Gambaccini, Jussi Pylkkanen (President of Christie’s Europe) and featured work by international portrait photographer Terry O Neil, and celebrity photographers Richard Young, Dave Benett and Dave Hogan.

The occasion was also chosen as the moment to announce for the first time that some £7 million was raised from the fundraising events that took place during Mr Mandela’s week long stay. These funds will go towards the Nelson Mandela charitable organization’s work and the 46664 campaign which continue to raise global awareness of HIV/AIDS an issue which has become, in Nelson Mandela’s own words a human rights issue.

Following its London residency the exhibition will tour worldwide to cities throughout Europe and America.

During his stay in London, Nelson Mandela met privately with world leaders, politicians and members of the Royal Family. Many of these friends, admirers and ambassadors of his charities, were also entertained at a private birthday fundraising dinner in Hyde Park. Some 500 guests attended the landmark celebration and were addressed by Bill Clinton, Gordon Brown and Forrest Whittaker. The week culminated in a hugely successful, sell-out concert in Hyde Park which included performances from Will Smith, Jamelia, Annie Lennox, Queen and Paul Rodgers, Amy Winehouse, the Sugababes, Eddy Grant and many more. All of these moments were recorded and now form the focus on the “I am 90 exhibition”.

The 46664 campaign focuses on HIV prevention, which essentially means helping to empower vulnerable and affected communities, especially in developing countries, to understand and respond to the challenge of endemic HIV infection. Funds raised support educational programmes and community based projects in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. For more information on 46664’s work visit www.46664.com

At the launch night Tim Massey, International Director of 46664, spoke about how inspirational Nelson Mandela’s visit to London was, and how it is now: “our duty to ensure his (Nelson Mandela’s) message reaches everyone, everywhere and hopefully together we can succeed in stemming the tide of new infections, whilst showing the compassion and support for those infected and affected by HIV AIDS.” In the words of Nelson Mandela “It’s in our hands”.
