The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in South Africa

The Nelson Mandela Children Fund’s Goelama project was established to improve the quality of well-being of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through innovative community support and economic strengthening strategies. The plight of orphans is South Africa is very serious – in 2005, UNAIDS estimated that approximately 1.2 million children were orphaned by AIDS. Through the Goelama project caregivers and children are assisted in building sustainable livelihoods through innovative social strategies involving households, communities and local governments. The specific projects supported by 46664 under the Goelama projects are DEDI (Diketso Eseng Dipuo Community Trust) and the Matchabeng Rape Intervention Care Centre.
